May Day and What's Been Happening

It is May first, to celebrate I went out to the yard and took pictures of whatever was blooming.

The other great thing about the beginning of May that my birthday falls in the first week. My first present this year was a new pair of sandals. I bought a pair of Clark's Privo sandals two years ago and fell in love. They are absolutely the best shoe to shoot photos in. After two seasons, the soles were a bit worn, so I asked for a new pair this year.

Tada!

I shot a wedding for 12 hours in them yesterday and my feet/knees/legs didn't hurt a bit. And that was the first time I wore them- no breaking in. LOVE THEM.

In Nora news, she turned 6 months at the end of April and we need to go do photos. She is sitting up all on her own, on a set schedule, and I am finally getting some decent sleep. Hooray.

Baby Layla: 1 year

Last year, my good friends Amy & Mike were blessed with a baby girl. After Layla's 4 month check up the only concern was that Layla was on the small side. 24 hours later Layla was being rushed to the hospital after having two seizures. Seizures in newborns range from some very benign reasons to very serious ones. In Layla's case, the cause was very serious. She was diagnosed with lissencephaly. Lissencephaly is a very rare neurological disease in which there is no cure and the cause is very vague. It may have been a viral infection during Amy's pregnancy that caused it or it could be genetics. Because the disease is so rare, doctors haven't been able to tell Amy & Mike much or give them statistics of the likelihood of having another child with the disease. At 13 months, Layla is thriving and exceeding predictions of the limitations with this disease. I am constantly amazed at the strength that Amy & Mike have and feel very fortunate to have such a great friendship with them.

Amy has been my "go-to" person for all my new mom craziness and it is great to be able to meet up with her and Layla for coffee and walks. I know it would be great if she had a group of moms locally she could relate with.

Over the summer, one of my friend's nephews was in town, so we did an impromptu senior session. I never blogged it because I was having a hard enough time keeping on work. Which ends up working out well because winter is a slow time for photo work. I can keep posting photos of Nora but eventually you might get tired of her cuteness. Plus this kid has some killer eyes.

While the first photos is cute, the second is pretty much the relationship between the two of them. Nora is trying to love on Harper and he isn't having it.

For Fun, For Myself

After I graduated from college, I don't think I picked up a camera for 2 years. I was burnt out. While I loved that I attended an art college, constant critiques were very hard on your self esteem. Sometimes you would rock it and sometimes you didn't. There is nothing like showing up for class when you know that you don't have a good body of work and then have to listen for a half hour on why it sucks. Well, skip ahead a few years and I am so happy I picked back up my camera to make a career out of it. A while ago, I was feeling the urge to create a series of work that had a thesis and was more fine art related. What my subject/theme was going to be, was undecided. I just knew I had an itch I needed to scratch.

While I have yet to finalize exactly what my thesis will be, I have nailed down a few concepts I wish to convey and a few people whose works give me inspiration. By the end of summer I hope to have a body of work to show you.

Even though this isn't a photo that is part of my new project, it is something else that I have worked on lately and felt like sharing.

Okay, everyone knows that babies need a lot of things in the first few years. In a matter of a week, your child may need a whole new wardrobe. A gadget could go from being priceless to worthless in a short span of a month. I knew this going into motherhood and there are plenty of ways to budget shop. My problem is that I HATE bargain shopping. HATE HATE HATE. I hate sorting through clearance racks for the right size, I hate sorting through heavily used items to find the one barely used baby item, and I hate the idea of spending a whole day hopping from one garage sale to another, hoping to find the items I need. That being said, I need to suck it up because I can not justify buying nothing but new items. My money is worth more than that. In a few Saturdays I am going to brave a giant baby and child resale hosted by a church in which there will be a plethora of people selling their children's stuff all in one place. The nightmares are beginning already.

In closing, here is a picture of Nora in her used but "new to us" exersaucer.

Cutie Pie

In the last 4 months I have seriously disappeared from my computer and my office. Nora is just the cutest baby in the world but boy is she demanding. Colicky may not be the word but she is definitely high maintenance. Finally after 4 months we are getting lots of smiles, she is sleeping in her crib, and slowly my sanity is coming back. For any of those people that feel that I was ignoring you, my apologies.

And if this face doesn't melt your heart, you are not human.

Jackie: Expecting!

Meet Jackie and Josh. If you can't tell, they're expecting. Soon! Jackie is already an awesome mom to 3 gorgeous daughters and in less than a month, we will finally find out if it will be 4 girls or if Josh will finally not be the only male in the house. I met Jackie a few years ago when we worked a wedding together. She is a local wedding coordinator and runs her own business called Simply Elegant. If you are getting married, you must check her out. Believe me, she is priceless!

Sarah & David: 6 months married

Johannah and Daniel's wedding took place the weekend of Thanksgiving and there is just something beautiful that takes place with that wedding of the year. Often it is clients that are living out of state that choose this weekend, knowing that family and friends will be close by for the holiday. These are weddings that radiate love and happiness of a truly intimate group of family and friends- which is what really makes a wedding beautiful. Throughout the day, I was just blown away by the kindness of Daniel and Johannah's family and can't thank them enough for allowing me to be part of it.

Jeez... it's been weeks since I have posted. Going into motherhood, I thought I was going to have all this time while the baby slept to do stuff. HA! Luckily Nora usually sleeps like a champ at night. She wakes up for food and promptly goes back to sleep in her swing (she still won't sleep in her crib) but during the day, she fights sleep unless you are holding her. Not much gets accomplished. I should be posting some client photos but instead I am posting my adorable little girl hanging out with my first "baby" (aka Lily).

I do have client work coming up: Sister-in-law's maternity shoot, Erica's family shoot, Annistyn's 6 months photos, a belated engagement session, and Johannah & Daniel's wedding. Keep checking out the blog. They are coming shortly.

Baby Harper

Originally Baby Harper and Nora due dates were 2 weeks apart, so when my sister-in-law asked me to do Harper's photos, I thought it would be no problem. But then Harper was a few days late and Nora was a week early. When it came down to it, taking the photos ended up not being that big of a deal. We did some before Nora arrived and then some after she arrived. The big deal was finding time to work on anything (if you couldn't tell by my lack of blog posts). Finally, I am getting around to sharing some photos of my cutey pie nephew.

Baby Doll Nora

Yesterday, Nora turned 6 weeks old. Supposedly things are suppose to get easier. Please tell me this is true. The first 4 weeks of her life, she cried horribly. Not just little fussy whimpers but full on, body convulsing, "I am in PAIN", cries. She is now on Zantac for acid reflux which has helped a lot but she is still a high needs baby. Lots of holding, lots of bouncing, and lots of love are needed.

Right now we are working on getting her to sleep in her crib. Due to the acid reflux, Nora had no tolerance for sleeping on her back which led her to be sleeping on me most of the time. While I have weened her from this, the only way to get her to sleep for more than a half hour at a time is for her to be sleeping by me. Of course, cosleeping is highly frowned upon in the medical community. This leads to the pediatrician giving me the disapproving look and talk about how I shouldn't be starting bad habits. While cosleeping is something I never wanted to do, it was the only way to soothe my baby, so I don't regret it. Now I just have some sleepless nights ahead of me while I encourage Nora to sleep in the crib. But you can't blame the poor girl. Wouldn't you want to sleep all cozy next to someone than by yourself?

Of course there are the good times as well. She now smiles at me (I like to think it is on purpose) and how good it feels to have her all snuggled up on me. I have been taking picture of her but rarely have the time to work on them but here is one of her being all cozy on the couch.

My original intent was to take a million photos of Nora- especially during the newborn stage but the little girl doesn't like to be put down. The last 3 weeks have been spent holding her. She will be completely passed out but the moment I go to lay her down, all hell will break lose out of her mouth. After reading a lot of info on fussy babies and her spitting up more when I lay her on her back, I am diagnosing her as having reflux- which equals her being in pain when lying on her back. Today I am experimenting with side sleeping and on my first attempt, she has napped for over an hour without being held. This hasn't happened first couple days home. Of course I had to grab some photos.

Baby Nora's Birth Story

To say that these last two weeks have been a whirlwind is going to be a great understatement. I would say that I have no idea where the time has gone but basically it breaks down to eating and sleeping and nothing else because you have a baby attached to you at all times. Finally I am getting a break to catch up on my blog and post about the birth of Baby Nora.

Nora's original due date was October 26th but I figured with how active I was, she was bound to be a little early. As my due date grew closer and closer, I was half hoping to go into labor at any moment and half hoping that I wouldn't because I was still wrapping up client work. My original intent was to have my client work done earlier but eventually I got so uncomfortable, I could only tolerate doing something for so long. Sitting, walking, and standing was putting a great strain on my lower back but laying down was killing my hips. Most of my final days were pretty uncomfortable- which puts a damper on your productivity.

Finally I was all caught up. Tuesday, Oct 19th, I woke up, cleaned the house, dropped all my client work in the mail, went to a doctors appointment (no further progress), walked with my mom, and then came home and did the dishes. During all of this, I was having contractions but I just figured they were Braxton-Hicks. Close to 11pm my contractions were getting more noticeable but I figured I would just go to sleep. Wrong! As soon as I laid down, it was apparent that I was in labor and in no time, my contractions were 5 minutes apart.

By the time we arrived at the hospital, I hadn't dilated any more from my doctor's appointment earlier that day but my water had broken, so labor was definitely going to happen in the next 24 hours. My original plan with labor was to try and do it naturally (without drugs) but after a very active day and the fact that my back was killing me, when they asked me about an epidural, I said yes, please! Looking back, I knew that was the best thing I could have done because I was already exhausted from my busy day and the epidural allowed for me to sleep for the rest of the night and most of the next day.

Baby Nora was born at 5:43pm on Wednesday, Oct 20th. Other than a little bout of jaundice, she is perfect (a little fussy but perfect). Below are just a two photos of the little girl but more are to come. The first one is in the hospital and the second one is here at home. And no, you aren't seeing things. She has a ton of hair, all of which has natural highlights. She was quite the talk of the hospital.

A little over a week away from my due date and I am wrapping up the very last of my work. Tomorrow I will be posting my last wedding until after Thanksgiving. Next you will be seeing a lot of photos of babies. My sister-in-law made me an aunt for the first time on Friday night. My new nephew (Harper Jay) was born a very healthy 8lb 10oz. Tomorrow I get to photograph the little guy.

And since a blog post isn't nearly as fun without a photo, I will leave you with a photo of Louiee, whom I am dog sitting until my sister-in-law gets out of the hospital. The poor thing doesn't even know how much his life is about to change.

Carmen & Joel {married}: Fort Wayne Wedding Photography

From the moment I arrived on Carmen & Joel's wedding day, it was a debate whether to move the outdoor wedding indoors. The forecast was saying it was definitely going to rain. Carmen refused to even look at the forecast until it was time to make a decision- not letting it put a damper on her wedding day mood. Finally it was time to make a decision. Joel really wanted to play it safe and move everything to the church but Carmen really wanted to, at least, have the ceremony in the original outdoor location. It only needed not to rain for 30 minutes. In the end, it never even rained. In fact, it was sunny and Carmen's instincts were right. She ended up getting some gorgeous ceremony photos.

The drizzle of rain coming down on Katie and Read's wedding day seemed like it was teasing us. One moment it seemed as if it was drawing to a close and then the next time you looked out the window, it was only going stronger. Finally, Katie decided to move the celebration indoors. Luckily the rain did yield for some brief moments to capture some photos and the clouds broke free after the ceremony to let us enjoy a gorgeous evening.

Of course, Katie and Read were completely laid back and didn't let the rain damper their spirits. The wedding was gorgeous, the reception was fun, and the mood was light and carefree. A very successful wedding.

Engagement sessions are great because it is a more relaxed time for you and your photographer to get to know each other. Emily and Harley are a great couple that conversation flowed freely with. And even though it started to rain, they were able to brush it off, saying that it was only destiny that it was raining since they are sure that it is going to rain on their wedding day. Katherine & Nick's Wedding Day: Fort Wayne Wedding Photography

There are just some weddings that despite how tired you are, you come home smiling. I consider myself very fortunate to be able to pursue the career in which I love and Nick and Katherine's wedding was one of those weddings that just reinforces my love.

Nick and Katherine had a smaller wedding (100 people or so) at Nick's parent's home in Mishawaka. Throughout the whole day and evening, you could just sense the general happiness and gratitude of what close family and friends bring to a wedding.

Probably the best Best Man speech I have heard- leave it to a lawyer (I hope that is right) to have the whole crowd laughing.

Many people ask me what venue is my favorite to shoot at and to be honest, outdoor weddings are my absolute, hands down, favorite. I've had never shot in a tent with a clear ceiling before and now I am going to wish that all my weddings had them. I was able to shoot without flash until late in the evening and capture the gorgeous light as the sun fell.

Nick's mom was amazing on the dance floor.

Carmen & Joel: Fort Wayne Engagement Photos

A few years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Carmen while working a job other than photography(I like to refer to it as my past life). I had just officially started my business and was still in the "getting it together" process. Carmen checked out my work and the next time I saw her, she informed me that I was going to be her wedding photographer some day. Since that moment I have been waiting for that call and last year I received it. Their wedding is in September but a few weeks ago we headed out to do their engagement photos. Here are some of my favorites.

What's Happening

So it has been super long since I have done a personal blog post. Everything, besides photography, in my life seems to be trumped by the fact that I am expecting a baby girl (Nora Elise Fey) near the end of October. Many people do know this and many people don't. I have been hesitant to talk about it for a few reason. First it was that I didn't know how this pregnancy was going to be and I didn't want to worry any of my clients. Then the pregnancy seemed to go pretty smoothly and there didn't seem to be much to talk about. The only side affects have been tiredness and the occasional leg cramps in the middle of the night. Oh, and the beginning of a few stretch marks are now here- which almost led me to tears. Now that it is getting so close, I feel more open to share.

Over the last few months, the baby's room has gone over a complete overhaul. Much thanks to my dad and husband. There was so much work to be done to the room and the final results are fabulous. Photos are to come shortly but I still need to order the dresser and arrange the room.

Maternity photos are to come shortly as well. My fabulous photographer friend Nicole is going to be taking them next Tuesday. I took hers last year and you can view them here. I'm excited and dreading the shoot at the same time. I think it is important to have photos to pass on to my child but I don't exactly feel that I look my hottest.

I can't wait for her to arrive and begin sharing photos.

Ian & Holly: Fort Wayne Wedding Photography

Due to location or schedules, it's not uncommon that I don't meet some of my brides or grooms before their wedding. Ian had originally set up all the details of me photographing their wedding because he works with the guy that did my logo. After a little facebook stalking one day, I realized that Ian graduated from my brother's high school in the same year (the school was very small so everyone knows each other). The greater surprise was that Holly and I went to the same high school (not the same grade) and we swam on swim team one year together (the one and only year I did it). The world is smaller than we think.

In regards to Ian & Holly's wedding, they had a beautiful, intimate ceremony with close family and friends and then we followed it up with portraits. It was scorching hot that day but Ian and Holly totally rocked it out.

In the last year, it seems fate has been bringing me in contact with Nashville in abundance. Just last weekend I was there shooting a wedding. Well, Jason and Heather both live there but they had a very intimate and sweet wedding in Fort Wayne a couple of weeks ago. I could have shot these two forever. Unfortunately, the weather had some other ideas. The ceremony at Lakeside Park started off a little cloudy but dark clouds started to roll in, cutting portrait time a little short. Lightning forced the reception inside but after it died down, I got one of my favorite shots of all time out of it.

For the last few years I have been attending Lotus: Yoga, Wellness, and Gallery. They are a downtown yoga studio and gallery that also offers personal training, massage and a chiropractic office. The best part of the studio is that rather than be in a sterile gym environment, you are surrounded by art. Recently I shot some photos for their new website. Here are some of the previews. Anyway...on to Baby A. She was a complete sweetheart, even if she refused to fall asleep during the shoot and if you don't think she is precious, there is something wrong with you.

You know what sucks? Your first day back at work after your honeymoon. I can honestly say that our honeymoon was the best time of our lives. I was still working a 9-5 job when Jason and I got married and I just dreaded walking back into that building after not being there for over a week. With that being said I am posting a few photos for Amanda and Matt since I know they are back at work today. I hope this makes their day a little bit better.

Pardon the delay in blogging but I have spent most of the last two weeks on the couch with a nasty cold- much thanks to my husband. I didn't catch it the first time he fell ill but then he had a relapse in which I couldn't fight off his germs. Still have a little cough but I am finally feeling much better.

The good news around here is that Spring seems to be here and all the flower bulbs I planted last year are starting to poke through the ground. I can't wait to see how my black tulips are going to look. Hopefully this gorgeous weather lasts until my first wedding next weekend.

This is going to be the ultimate year of babies. Liam was the 2nd baby born from one of my wedding couples. Usually I tell parents that it is best to start out with a sleeping baby- you can usually manipulate them anyway you like. Plus most newborns aren't focusing yet and you end up with all these cross-eyed photos if they are awake. Well, Liam was having none of that. He definitely didn't want to be sleeping and for only being 6 days old, he had the most focus skills I had ever seen on a newborn.

Sarah and David are the first one of my wedding couples to have a baby (at least that I know about). David's parents flew in from Texas to welcome Joshua. Joshua is the first grandchild on both sides, so it was required to get a few photos of the new family. Personally, I think he looks just like David.

Natalie and Adam were originally married over the summer in Australia (where they live!) but celebrated their union again over the holidays in Fort Wayne for Adam's friends and family that couldn't join them the first time. The weather couldn't have been more perfect- snowy white. Natalie and Adam now have one set of photos on the beaches of Australia and another in a perfectly snowy Midwest.

I wasn't kidding when I said that I knew a lot of people that were expecting right now and I was super excited when Lesa said she wanted me to shoot her maternity shoot. Lesa is another amazing local photographer in town and runs Shadowlands Photography. This is her fourth baby but her first maternity shoot (which she totally rocked). I can't wait to meet the little one.
